Next
generation game console Nintendo
Wii is an
example of how contemporary people in the modern western
world will interact with virtual environments. The
system allows for far more intuitive control in a virtual
environment than that has been previously. I will help to
bridge the gap between physical and digital space using
creative and artistic means. We're at the dawn of an era
where keyboards and mouses will seem archaic, and new tools
to hybridize the virtual and physical worlds will be
necessary. 3-D games mimic reality and create alternate
environments with endless potential. I will be there to
change our modern world and further blur the lines between
reality and virtual reality. I will help usher the modern
world into a digital future.
I consider myself to be a digital artist. I use computers
as a contemporary artistic medium and study traditional
media such as photography, painting, sculpture, and
drawing. As a digital artist, I ride the fine line between
computer programming and fine art. My work concentrates on
the potential effects computers will have on a digital
society and that it is lived in. The more I study as an
artist, the more I begin to realize how art requires
content and purpose. We have cameras and camcorders to
render reality. We have computers and special effects to
distort reality, but with out content what is the purpose?
I'm consistently conscious as to whether what I'm doing
takes a stance or challenges contemporary ideals.
Games and other forms of interactive media has been a
passion of mine since a very young age. They didn't only
entertain but also inspired and interested me. As an
employee of a movie rental store, a game store, and a video
appliance store, I’ve been allowed the opportunity to
closely observe how people interact with mass media. These
jobs have also taught me the value of group work. When
I founded Media Arts Club at SUNY College at Fredonia,
I instigated several collaborative student projects.
At SUNY Nassau Community College I pursued a job as a
web designer. During this time I realized I didn't want to
be “just another web designer” but rather to
pursue digital interaction to a higher creative realm. SUNY
College at Fredonia gave me the opportunity I desired with
classes in Media Art as well as traditional forms of art. A
lot of the work I took the form of experimental video and
traditional art. Works such as Game
Code, You are Me, and
Media
Crows consumed
my life. I'd spend entire weekends working in the art lab
working on specific personal visions. At this time, I
discovered that my work wasn't just a means to a good
grade, but rather is a catalyst for my own personal
visions.
Upon graduation I look forward to becoming a leader in the
future of our digital world. I want to help create virtual
environments and intuitive ways to interact with them. The
modern world right now is only in the infancy of digital
interaction and those excited and socially aware of the
potential of bring the world to an exciting future will be
our worlds leaders.
