Major Historical Influences of New Media Art
I’ve recently been studying the origin of New Media Art, something that I feel I either should’ve been taught or should’ve research in my own time. NMA as art form has been influenced by several other art forms.
First is Dadaism. Dadaism was found upon the idea that nothing last forever and materials are destructible. Dadaism was also a reaction to mass forms of reproduction such as printing and typing. This fits in very neatly into NMA and the culture we live in now. With endlessly duplicated computer files and access to wide spread information such as the internet its clear how Dadaism is as strong now as it was in the 1940’s. Conceptual Art is also important. Conceptual art is the concept of meaning of a work. A work neither needs to be seen nor completed to function as a finished piece. Conceptual Art and Dadaism are a lot alike in this aspect. It’s not what the work is but rather what it means or stands for. If art can be destroyed or replicated infinitely then create it at all? NMA is created for conceptual purposes, for meaning.
Pop Art appears in NMA in that NMA borrows from other sources. A lot of NMA work uses other sources such as pieces of code in the case of applications, or game engines in the case of machinima. And finally Video Art can be seen in NMA simply in the use of new technologies. Technology plays the part of the medium. In Video Art portable camcorders are used as well as monitors. A New Media Artist uses code, the internet, computers, and circuitry as a painter uses canvas, paint, and brushes.
Although NMA seems like fresh new ground and weak in the spectrum of the history of art it has a clear place of its own. Heavily influenced by the last few decades NMA is in its infancy and we can look forward to its further evolution.

Podcast
I've started participating in a podcast. Me and my buddy Elliott Rothman as well as other various peers of mine including Robin Moore, Howard Tyson, Martin Falvey, and Thomas Hamilton, have been doing a audio podcast (internet radio show). The goal of it is to capture the conversations that usually take place in the lab. A lot of what we talk about is relatively interesting but much more is utter crap. subject matter includes art, video games, computer programs, and casual small talk. we just feel this would be a fantastic way to be able to capture and reference previous conversations. Listen in, at the very least its relatively humorous.
